Starting line up

The Match

It was a cold and windy to start the season for the fresh looking Maulers with a number of new players representing the Blue and Black. 1st game players made up a lot of the team with Tim (Australia) Simon, Pontus, Jon (all three Sweden), Matthew (Ireland) all getting a run and showing tonnes of positives.

The game starting like the weather (terribly) with conditions affecting the players skills a great deal. The Roos had some good hard at the ball players and with the aid of a pretty hefty breeze were able to get on the scoreboard first. Coops may have been wishing that he stay in Hamburg after an early head clash left him dazed, while Nauris in his first real start for the club did a great job on a very handy forward. Thanks to him and experience from Ross and Taffy, the boys down back were able to limit the damage to 1 goal 4 points. It could have been a lot worse. Matthew and Chris were super subs, coming on and giving us spark with Matthew in his first game getting the first goal for the year and steadying the flow of shots from the Roos.

After a break at Quarter time the boys rallied themselves and with the aid of the breeze took control of the game. Brodie and Ben starting working well forward with the help of Tim and Hendrick snuck forward from the back line for a goal. The Maulers suffered a huge loss with Toby breaking a rib and having to head to hospital. The new guys that were getting a good run started settling into the game and showed that Malmö will have a great future if we can keep these boys around.

The third Quarter was by far the stand out for the boys. After being challenged to run themselves into the ground against the wind, the team responded in a empathic way. Players were charging up and down the field running the Roos off their feet and Malmö completely outscored Aalborg against a very strong wind. The damage could have been far greater had there not been some uncharacteristic mistakes made by some veteran players ;).

Going into the last quarter the emphasis was on finishing off strong. With senior players spending a lot more time on the bench, it allowed the new guys to get some valuable playing time. Despite this the boys were still able to put on 4 unanswered goals to run away with a  nearly 70 point win.

There was no doubt that the Roos had a good side but needed more players to maintain the pace of the game. In trying conditions our inside players such as Coops, and Christopher really lead the way, to feed the outside run of Tim who was dangerous with the ball in hand. Stretch didn’t lose a ruck all day and was well supported by Matthew who shows he is going to be someone we want to keep around. Ross, and Taffy played great defensive games with their body and voice and were well supported by Hendrick, Nauris and Simon. Fredric looked great up forward creating loads of chances and being a target and Sami and Pontus offered great runs and leads that they weren’t always rewarded for.

While there is a lot to improve upon it was a great start to the year. A huge shout out to Måns, Freddie and Jon who all helped with the Roos for numbers.
