The sun was shining on the first day of August, not only was it a rematch of our previous encounter with Helsingborg Saints but the weather was almost duplicate minus a couple of degrees. Eyes were raised as Malmö players and supporters watched the Saints players make their way to the ground with a few improvements in their list, it was sure to be a hard fought match.

The first qtr saw Malmö edge away to a slight 2 goal lead only to see the Saints pull it back in the second to be only 2 points down at half time. It became obvious that it would be a matter of whoever had the most legs left as both teams headed for the shade at the break. The third qtr was Malmös chance to pull ahead and that they did scoring 5,1 and keeping the Saints scoreless. This momentum carried on into the 4th, Malmö netting 6 majors to Helsingborgs 2, Final score being 17.8.110 to 8.6.54.

All the Maulers performed well and showed spirit to play out the whole match in warm conditions especially when we were being challenged at half time. Tony Persson and Fabian Rundbäck were solid in the back line, unfortunately Fabian twisted his ankle late in the 3rd and scored some solid bench time in the 4th. Ross and Jay, brothers at half back did a great job with Jay also damaging himself only to strap his ankle up and get back on the field asap. Denis O’Riordan showed you don’t have to train every week to play well, his experience was well appreciated out of halfback. Adam Jennings ruled the ruck and then pushed back to fill the hole in the back line left by Fabs, well done you irish son of a gun! Our mids continued to show good form with Matt Byrne, Simon Ward, Chris Mårtensson (4 goals), Ed Neerhut and Tobias Gogu all spending time in the middle as well as getting it done in their other positions around the ground. Wayne Schuck anchored the forward line with Mahatma McMahan, Måns Hammarstrand, Adis and Haris Basovic and Conor Moynihan all pitching in for some interesting and not so orthodox goals. Hats off to Danny and our newest Mauler Declan Waters for helping Helsinborg out for the day, thanks for only kicking 2 goals Declan, and Danny IT’S OK!!!, WE WON’T HATE YOU IF YOU KICK A GOAL AGAINST US!!!

Best on ground: Matt Byrne, Ed Neerhut and Tony Persson.
