GV Rebels 3.3 (21) def. by Malmö Red Eyes 14.6 (90)

The all-Malmö SAFL came to an anti-climactic close this weekend as Malmö Red Eyes handed out a royal beating to their Port Malmö counterparts, the GV Rebels.

Having won a game apiece during the regular season a close final was expected but after an even first quarter it was one-way traffic. GV will feel a little disappointed in their performance after starting competitively but the experience on the Red Eyes team told as they surged relentlessly from the beginning of the second quarter never allowing GV a chance of clawing themselves back in to the game.

To repeat the sentiments of Red Eyes coach Matt McMahan during the victory speech, the season has been entertaining and hard-fought but most importantly it fulfilled its’ role as a developmental competition and has given so many players an opportunity to hone their skills which ultimately has paid dividends in the DAFL. A clear indication of what the SAFL provides was evident in  the post-match presentation ceremony when the GF Best on Ground award was given to 17-yr old Alfred Bengtsson, a player who has made huge strides this season and the Goalkicking Award was presented to Mathias Andersen, who at 15 years of age and in his first year of football kicked four goals in the final round to edge out David Verngren by a goal.

So congratulations to Malmö Red Eyes on their victory and all involved throughout the season for making it a resounding success!
